Talks in Miami between representatives of the United States, Ukraine, European countries and NATO on ending the Russia-Ukraine war ended earlier than planned. Ukrainska Pravda reported this on Saturday, citing a Radio Liberty correspondent and the US negotiator Steve Witkoff. The outlet attributes the early finish to an unexpected agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on supplying Russian diesel fuel to the American and global markets.
“The Miami talks ended earlier than planned. There will be no second day, sources tell me,” Radio Liberty correspondent Alex Raufoglu wrote on X.
Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, for his part, called Friday’s meeting constructive and promised that diplomatic efforts would continue. He said the participants discussed short-term measures for the coming winter, including the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system and grain exports, as well as security guarantees. They also covered long-term arrangements for the security of Ukraine and Europe, postwar reconstruction and Ukraine’s economic prosperity, including its accession to the EU. In Witkoff’s assessment, the meeting helped identify issues for further work before the next US contacts with Russia.
The Miami meeting took place on the same day that Trump, after a phone call with Putin, unexpectedly announced that Russia would immediately deliver more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to the American and global markets, with supplies rising in the coming months. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the deal.
