In the early hours of Wednesday, October 7, Russia launched a massive combined strike on Ukraine, using ballistic and cruise missiles as well as attack drones. Explosions were heard in Kyiv at around 3:15 a.m. local time, while Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy were also hit, with deaths and injuries reported.
According to eyewitnesses, explosions rang out in Kyiv almost immediately after the Ukrainian air force warned that Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers were approaching the border. “The missiles are falling one after another — by my count, at least 10 to 12 explosions, it's pretty loud in the city centre,” one resident of the capital said. The strikes came on the night Russian leader Vladimir Putin marked his 74th birthday.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that Russian forces had hit non-residential buildings in the Obolon district and warehouses in Podil. Non-residential premises were also on fire in the Shevchenkivskyi district, while a fire broke out at a garage cooperative in the Darnytskyi district. “We rescued two people while putting out the fire,” Klitschko wrote. According to Ukrainian authorities, two people were killed in the Darnytskyi district.
Besides the capital, Russia also struck Dnipro, where Russian forces attacked an industrial enterprise. This was reported by Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, who said the authorities were still assessing the scale of the damage.
In Zaporizhzhia, according to Mykhailo Semikin, head of the local military administration, the strike hit transport infrastructure. “As a result of the attack, there may be temporary traffic restrictions on some stretches of road,” he wrote on Telegram.
Russian forces also attacked Sumy, using fibre-optic-guided attack drones. One person was killed in the city and two others were injured.
