Świątek Demolishes Czech Nosková Bejlek, Bageling Her in the First Set in Toronto

At the WTA tournament in Toronto, Polish tennis player Iga Świątek handed a crushing defeat to Czech player Linda Nosková Bejlek — 6-0, 6-3. The second-round match was part of a tournament boasting a prize fund of $7,433,076.

Bejlek, ranked 38th in the world, failed to win a single game in the first set and only managed to break her opponent's serve for the first time in the tenth game of the second set. She then held her own serve to close the gap to 2-3, before earning nine break points in a row on her next return game.

Still, the tournament's No. 7 seed and six-time Grand Slam champion held her nerve through an exhausting 25-minute game, snuffing out the looming comeback. Świątek finally sealed the match on her fourth match point, converting it on her own serve.

This was Bejlek's second loss to Świątek this season — the Pole had also beaten her in straight sets earlier in the second round of the French Open.

In other action on the women's draw, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina battled past Spain's Bouzas Maneiro in three sets, while her compatriot Marta Kostyuk got past Canada's Rebecca Šebov. On the men's side, at the parallel tournament in Montreal, which carries a prize pool of $9,415,724, first-round winners included Sebastián Báez, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz.
