Man shoots official dead during weapons check in Bavaria

In the Bavarian municipality of Berngau on Thursday, a man shot dead an official who had come to check his weapons. The official’s female colleague was seriously wounded. According to police, the gunman appears to be inside the house, which has been cordoned off by security forces.

The incident was first reported by the newspaper Bild, and the broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk, citing police, added that the woman is gravely wounded. Residents have been urged to stay indoors.

“According to the information we have, there is a man in the house who apparently fired several shots,” police spokesman Jonas Krauss said.

A large-scale operation is under way at the scene: helicopters are on standby overhead and, according to Bild, an armoured vehicle is parked in front of the house. According to Bayerischer Rundfunk, about 150 police officers are working in the municipality, which has around 2,600 residents.

Bayerischer Rundfunk reports that two employees of the Neumarkt district administration in the Upper Palatinate visited the house during the day, after which shots were heard. Police were alerted by local residents who heard the gunfire.
