Oil drilling platform sinks in the Atlantic off Gabon

The oil and gas drilling platform Prospector 5, owned by Bermuda-based Borr Drilling, sank on Saturday evening in the Atlantic Ocean near the Gabonese town of Mayumba. According to Reuters, one Indian national died and four people are missing: three Gabonese citizens and one other person.

According to the company's preliminary information, a “punch-through” of the seabed occurred during preloading, causing the platform to lose stability and flood. As The Telegraph explained, this happens when, during an attempt to jack up the rig, one of its legs suddenly sinks into the seabed deeper than planned.

Gabon's Ministry of Oil and Gas said a crisis centre has been set up and the navy has been ordered to step up search-and-rescue operations at sea. Minister Clother Kondja also said the ministry has launched a technical investigation.

According to the ministry, no leak of harmful substances has been recorded. Pollution-control equipment remains on standby to protect the coast and the nearby Mayumba National Park.
