Journalists at a German weekly have found that Turkish migrants are using a cunning scheme to get asylum in Germany. A forged case over “persecution for criticising Erdoğan” can be bought via Telegram or TikTok, and a set of documents costs from 800 euros (about 20 thousand crowns).
The scheme works like this: someone who wants asylum publishes a sharp post about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. A bribed prosecutor takes it as a pretext and opens an investigation. A record of the case appears on the Turkish portal Uyap. The applicant then takes this record to the German authorities to prove that he faces political persecution.
Full packages, including illegal smuggling into Germany, start at 6000 euros (150 thousand crowns). For 800 euros, a certificate of investigation is on offer, including a house search and an indictment document. The dealer promised the reporters such papers that they would get a residence permit “anywhere they want”.
The manipulation around Uyap was reported to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf). Until now the fraud mostly involved imitation websites. The fact that real court records now appear to be abused as well came as a shock to the agency.
Since 2021, about 140 thousand Turks have applied for asylum in Germany. At the same time, the share of applicants granted protection by Germany fell from 43 percent in 2020 to roughly 12 percent. The numbers are still very high: at the administrative court in Gelsenkirchen, two district chambers deal solely with complaints from rejected Turkish asylum seekers.
