Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is preparing to make his first major investment in professional sports — a consortium that includes him is close to buying around a third of the shares in English football club Liverpool. According to The Guardian, the deal will be worth about £1.35 billion (roughly 38.3 billion crowns).
The club's current owner, American firm Fenway Sports Group, could announce the deal as early as this week. The consortium is led by British-Indian entrepreneur Amit Bhatia, who until recently owned second-tier club Queens Park Rangers. Other investors include Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook.
For Bezos, this would be his first completed investment in sport, although he had previously shown interest in buying an NFL team. Bezos is one of the richest people on the planet: according to Forbes' March ranking, with a fortune of $224 billion he ranks fourth in the world.
Fenway Sports Group bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million (about 8.5 billion crowns at the current exchange rate). If the new deal goes through at the stated price for a one-third stake, Liverpool's overall valuation would top four billion pounds — showing just how much the value of leading European football clubs has grown over the past 16 years.
