The City Museum offers exhibitions that trace the historical development and growth of Prague. Who were the first settlers, where did they come from, and why did they choose this particular spot? How did they live, how did they find food, what did they wear, and what did they do for a living? The City of Prague Museum answers all these questions. Historical documents, maps, plans, models, sculptures and paintings all help bring the history and atmosphere of the city to life.
The museum's most famous exhibit is a cardboard model of Prague created by Antonín Langweil. This miniature model, covering 20 square metres, depicts Prague as it looked in the 1850s and includes over 2,000 buildings. Remarkably, the city has been recreated with astonishing precision, showing not only the capital's main landmarks but also the tiniest details, right down to windows, staircases, gardens and street lamps.
