Kutná Hora is the easiest UNESCO day trip from Prague. The direct R9 train from Praha hlavní nádraží reaches Kutná Hora hl.n. in 51 minutes. Book the Sedlec Ossuary in advance: entry is by timed slot, and the 220 CZK ticket also covers Sedlec Cathedral. Add St Barbara's (180 CZK), the Italian Court and the medieval silver mine at Hrádek, and you have a full day. Around Prague checked prices and hours on the sights' official websites and train times in IDOS on 30 October 2026.

Why Kutná Hora is worth the trip

Silver made Kutná Hora (German: Kuttenberg) rich in the Middle Ages. It was once the second most important town of the Bohemian kingdom. In 1995 the historic centre, St Barbara's and the cathedral at Sedlec were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Sedlec, next to the main station, has the ossuary and the cathedral; the old town, a few minutes away by local train, has the rest.

Sedlec Ossuary and Sedlec Cathedral

The ossuary fills the lower chapel of the Cemetery Church of All Saints, a Gothic church from the first half of the 14th century. Its bone decoration is attributed to the architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel (early 18th century) and to František Rint (19th century). Look for the four bone pyramids, the chandelier said to contain every bone of the human body, and the Schwarzenberg coat of arms from around 1870. It is still a working church and the resting place of thousands of people.

Halfway between the ossuary and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St John the Baptist stands the information centre. The cathedral was built in just 30 years (1290–1320), then the largest church in what is now Czechia. Hussites burned it in 1421. Santini rebuilt it in the early 18th century in a "Baroque Gothic" style, which the parish credits for the UNESCO listing. Photos without flash are allowed here.

St Barbara's Cathedral

St Barbara's is formally a church, but it was built on the scale of a cathedral and dedicated to the patron saint of miners. The Parler workshop started it in the second half of the 14th century. Benedikt Ried later added the upper gallery, the vault of the main space and the tent-shaped roofs. Work stopped in the mid-16th century when the silver ran out; today's look comes from a neo-Gothic restoration around 1900. Look out for the Gothic frescoes and the stained glass by František Urban. Guided tours (up to 40 people, 60 minutes) must be booked at least 14 days ahead.

The Italian Court and the silver mine at Hrádek

The Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) was the royal mint founded by King Wenceslas II and also a royal palace. Today it houses the town hall. You can see the Royal Mint on your own, or take route 4, which combines the cellar, the mint and a guided tour of the palace. For 50 CZK you can strike your own Prague groschen; book this by phone or e-mail.

At Hrádek, the Czech Museum of Silver runs the guided "Way of Silver" tour, about 1.5 hours long. In a helmet with a lamp and a miner's coat, you walk about 250 m of an original medieval mine. Children under 6 are not allowed in the mine. A tour in a foreign language costs 40 CZK extra per person, and booking ahead is recommended.
