In the Czech town of Dvůr Králové nad Labem, a man stole a car right from a petrol station — the owner had left the keys in the ignition while he went inside to pay for fuel. The incident took place in the morning, after 8 a.m., police spokeswoman Šárka Pyšlová said.
The stolen car was found the very next day, parked outside a grocery store in the town of Třebechovice pod Orebem. Besides the car, worth almost 50,000 crowns, the suspect also stole the victim's work tools worth more than 20,000 crowns.
According to police, the suspect's interrogation revealed that he had intended to sell the stolen items — he had already pawned an electric jigsaw. In the end, the jigsaw and the rest of the stolen property were returned to the owner.
Pyšlová added that the man has also been charged with getting behind the wheel at least five times despite having previously been banned from driving. This happened repeatedly in the Trutnov, Náchod, Hradec Králové and Rychnov districts. He was therefore charged not only with theft but also with violating a court-ordered driving ban.
Police also say that at least once the young man filled his car with diesel fuel worth more than 2,000 crowns and drove off without paying.
On Saturday, a police commissioner submitted a request to the prosecutor to have the suspect taken into custody — a judge at the district court in Trutnov approved it, and the man is now under arrest. If found guilty, he faces up to two years in prison.
