Near the main railway station in Brno, two men, aged 32 and 33, repeatedly shouted the Nazi slogan “Sieg Heil” and raised their arms in the Nazi salute. The incident was reported by the city police.
A municipal police patrol was driving past the boarding islands in front of the station with the windows of their car down and clearly heard what was happening. According to police spokesman Jakub Hanem, the men first shouted obscenities and then loudly and clearly cried “Sieg Heil” at least three times. The younger of the two repeatedly raised his outstretched right arm as he did so. The officers stopped their car and ran after them.
By that time, an angry witness — a forty-year-old man — had already approached the pair and told them to their faces that his ancestors had fought against Nazism. When the two men tried to tell the police they had merely been waving their arms, the outraged witness called them cowards who could not even openly own up to what they had done.
According to Hanem, the officers concluded that the men might have committed a criminal offence. The young men also kept insulting the patrol officers and claimed to be close friends with a sitting member of parliament. Both suspects were handed over to the criminal police and now face imprisonment.
The police spokesman clarified that the name of the lawmaker the pair referred to cannot be disclosed, since there may in fact be no connection at all between him and the two men shouting the slogans, let alone a friendly one.
