Along Croatia's Adriatic coast, a new habit is spreading fast: payment terminals in cafes and restaurants now prompt tourists to leave a tip — offering options of 5, 10 or 15 percent of the bill, or a custom amount. According to the Croatia Week portal, 60–70% of all payments in Croatian food service now go cashless, and in tourist hotspots like Istria, Split and Dubrovnik, the share of card payments is even higher.
Local media note that tourists used to dig through their pockets for coins even when paying the main bill by card — now the terminal itself asks about a tip right at checkout. Technically, the option isn't mandatory, but more and more guests feel like they're being pressured into it.
Croatia's tax authority reports that last year, receipts officially recorded more than €49 million in tips — a 58% jump from the first year after this tracking system was introduced in 2024. The statistics show that more and more customers are choosing to leave tips by card.
Czech tourists are split on the trend. Some believe tipping should remain a personal choice, not something a machine pushes on you. "If the food, drinks and service are good, tipping should be a matter of goodwill. But not something demanded or forced in any way," wrote a commenter named David on the outlet's Facebook page.
Others are firmly on the side of coastal staff. "I'd feel ashamed to leave without tipping," admitted a user named Věra. Meanwhile, some commenters point to the sharp rise in prices at Croatian establishments in recent years and say that's exactly why they refuse to tip on principle.
Some compare the situation to Italy, where receipts clearly list separate charges for Coperto (a cover charge for the table setting, cutlery and bread) and Servizio (a service fee, usually 10–15%) — in which case no additional tip is expected. Tourists tend to find this system more transparent.
Some visitors prefer to leave tips strictly in cash. "It's usually 15 percent — a small thank-you for how well they take care of guests, with a smile and genuine warmth," shared a tourist named Marcela, adding that staff even bring out a bowl of water for her dog.
Observers believe these percentage prompts on payment terminals are an attempt to import the American tipping model into a European context — in the US, tips make up a significant part of staff wages, and not leaving one is considered rude. In Croatia, however, tipping has traditionally been far more relaxed, depending on the guest's personal impression of the service. As in Czechia, the accepted norm in Croatia is still around 10% of the bill for good service.
