Suitcases with passports fall off on D1 highway in Czechia — police track down owners, and a whole family

On the D1 motorway in the Vysočina region, luggage containing important documents fell out of a moving car belonging to an Israeli family — a story with an unexpectedly happy ending, as recounted by traffic police spokeswoman Dana Čírtková.

According to her, at the last stop before merging onto the D1 near the 119th kilometre marker heading towards Prague, the driver hadn't closed the boot properly. As the car picked up speed on the highway, items began falling out one by one, straight onto the road.

The father set off on foot to look for the belongings

Once the family noticed their luggage was missing, they pulled over onto the shoulder. The head of the family got out and walked back along the crash barrier to search for the lost items, while his wife and son drove on in the car to take the next exit off the motorway.

At that moment, a traffic police patrol happened to be driving along that stretch of road. Near the 115th kilometre, the officers spotted a suitcase by the central barrier, and a little further on, a backpack.

"The officers stopped, collected the items and loaded them into the car. They immediately tried to work out what was inside and find contact details for the owners. Inside were passports, a laptop, clothing and other personal belongings," the police spokeswoman said.

The owner was found by the barrier

It didn't take long to find the owner — after driving just a few hundred metres further, the officers spotted a man standing behind the crash barrier. "They brought him into the car and headed to the nearest rest stop to sort out the situation," Čírtková explained.

It turned out to be the Resh couple from Tel Aviv, who had come to Czechia to visit one of their sons — a handball player based here — before planning to travel on to visit another son, who plays handball in Germany. Before getting onto the motorway, the family had made a brief stop, and the boot hadn't been closed tightly — at speed, it popped open and the belongings began falling out.

A lost family and a thank-you letter

The adventure didn't end there: after leaving the motorway, the wife and son took a wrong turn and ended up in the town of Štoky. Once officers pinpointed their location, they drove the husband over to reunite with the rest of the family.

Soon afterwards, the traffic police leadership received a warm letter of thanks. "Both officers helped us avoid some very serious trouble. When I arrived at the scene, I was met with exceptional willingness to help, patience and respect," wrote Avi Resh to the head of the traffic police department.

"They helped me contact my family and drove me back to our car — well beyond the call of duty," the grateful man added, praising the professionalism and humane approach of the Czech police officers.
