Czech U18 Hockey Team Crushed by Switzerland at Glinka-Gretzky Cup, Finishes Sixth

The Czech men's national under-18 hockey team suffered a heavy 1:5 defeat to Switzerland in the fifth-place match at the Glinka-Gretzky Cup, currently underway in Edmonton, Canada. The resulting sixth-place finish came as a surprise for a squad that had beaten the same Swiss side twice before the tournament and thrashed Canada 6:0.

A Fast Start and Missed Chances

The Czechs dominated the opening period, outshooting their opponents by an impressive 21:4. Polášek and Vaníček both had golden opportunities to score but failed to convert — the former saw the puck bounce awkwardly in the slot, while the latter couldn't beat goalkeeper Blaser with a backhand attempt.

The most dangerous chance of the period, however, fell to Switzerland's Leo Ulrich, who broke in alone on goal after a Czech defenseman's error at the blue line — but Czech netminder Štěpánek came up big with a glove save.

A Turning Point and a Disastrous Finish

The deadlock was broken early in the second period when Switzerland's Sebastian Weber converted on the power play. The Czechs quickly equalized through Lukáš Kahlíř, who scored at even strength. But that was where Czech resistance effectively ended.

The turning point came with two consecutive penalties midway through the game — while shorthanded, the Czechs couldn't withstand the pressure, and Jonas Neuenschwander extended Switzerland's lead immediately after the second penalty expired.

Heading into the third period, a one-goal deficit still seemed surmountable, but just 88 seconds into the final frame, Ulrich notched Switzerland's third goal. The third period turned into a showcase for the forward, who added his second goal of the game — the team's fifth overall — and created two more dangerous chances. Sandwiched between his two goals, Alessandro Domenicelli made it 4:1.

Tournament Summary for the Czech Team

By the end of the Glinka-Gretzky Cup, the Czech under-18 national team managed just one win — over Germany — while suffering three defeats, to the USA, Finland, and Switzerland. The team ultimately finished sixth, falling short of expectations set by a strong pre-tournament run that included two wins over the Swiss and a 6:0 rout of Canada.

In the tournament semifinal, Canada defeated Finland 6:3.
