German Foreign Minister in Kyiv: Ukraine Will Win the War

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who arrived in Kyiv by special train, declared that Germany stands by Ukraine and is confident in its victory over Russian aggression. He made the statement shortly after arriving in the Ukrainian capital, according to the German newspaper Die Welt.

The visit came two days after a massive Russian missile strike on Kyiv that reportedly killed 16 people and wounded 130. Wadephul accused Moscow of "unrestrained killing of civilians" and of deliberately targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, noting that Russia has been attacking its neighbor with unprecedented intensity this summer — a statement reported by the outlet Ukrainska Pravda.

According to the minister, July and August have been the deadliest months for Ukrainian civilians in the entire five years of the conflict. "We see this suffering, we see how Ukraine is fighting, and we will continue to support it," Wadephul assured, adding that no other country is helping Kyiv as actively — financially and militarily — as Germany.

Fourth Visit in 16 Months

This marks Wadephul's fourth trip to Kyiv since taking office 16 months ago. This time, the visit took place shortly before the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's declaration of independence, which will be marked on Monday.

Commenting on the minister's trip, the German tabloid Bild noted that he likely did not bring along the Patriot missiles that Ukraine desperately needs to defend against ballistic strikes. "The situation looks hopeless for them right now," the paper wrote.

Strikes Continue on Both Sides

Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. While the more than 1,200-kilometer front line has seen only minor shifts, both sides continue to intensify strikes on targets deep in enemy territory.

Ukrainian drone attacks have caused fuel shortages in Russia, with warehouses belonging to Russian logistics firms and defense enterprises becoming regular targets. Overnight Saturday, Ukrainian drones struck a logistics center belonging to the online retailer Ozon in Russia's Samara region, sparking a major fire. Russia, for its part, carried out strikes that killed two people — a railway worker in Kyiv and another victim in Zaporizhzhia. Odesa was also hit, with Russian missiles seriously damaging several energy facilities.
