Hradec Králové Let Slip a Win Over Beşiktaş in the Europa League After a Blunder at the Back

Czech side Hradec Králové lost at home to Turkish giants Beşiktaş in a Europa League clash, despite playing with a man advantage for most of the second half. Head coach Jiří Hořejš made no attempt to hide his frustration after the match, singling out a defensive error that led directly to the visitors' winning goal.

According to the coach, his side created three clear-cut chances while playing against ten Turkish players but failed to convert any of them. "We earned a red card against our opponents, and the match was shaping up perfectly in our favour. Unfortunately, instead of turning the score in our favour, we conceded a cheap goal that spoiled what should have been a wonderful evening at our Malšovice arena," Hořejš said.

A Costly Defensive Mistake

The turning point came when Turkish forward Semih Kılıçsoy put Beşiktaş ahead despite their numerical disadvantage. During the build-up, Hradec defender Filip Čihák misjudged a cross and inadvertently played it past his own goalkeeper Adam Zadražil, after teammate Daniel Hora had failed to see his duel through to the end, leaving the opponent unmarked.

"We simply didn't finish the job with the player who was crossing the ball. Our left-back was left unmarked, and then he didn't see the situation through either. In a match like this, you need to do more, not give something away. That's what disappoints me — a player simply cannot afford that," the coach said, harshly criticising his players' actions.

A Young Talent and Squad Losses

The coach singled out the performance of young forward Abdullahi Umar, who came on as a substitute and visibly changed the team's attacking pattern. "He's confident, fearless, sharp, and didn't waste any easy passes. His only shortcoming was failing to convert a big chance," Hořejš said, adding that with every appearance the forward is making a stronger case for a place in the starting lineup.

The team also suffered a fresh injury blow: Jakub Kučera was forced off after reporting what he described as a cracking sensation in his ankle. According to the coach, the player is unlikely to be fit in time for Sunday's league match against Baník. He was replaced by David Ludvíček, whom the coach also praised for a confident debut under difficult circumstances.

Next Up: The Away Leg in Turkey

The return leg will be played in Turkey next week, and Hořejš admitted that for most of his squad it will be a completely new experience in terms of atmosphere in the stands. "We're heading into an environment that very few of us have ever experienced, but that's exactly why we play football. Right now we need to focus on Sunday's match to regroup," the coach concluded, expressing hope that his side would cope with the pressure on the road.
