After a noticeable cool spell, summer heat is set to return to Czechia next week. According to meteorologist František Šopko, the peak of the warm-up will come on Thursday, when temperatures are expected to reach 27–32°C. The forecaster says it's still too early to call this summer over — hot days could still be in store come September.
The first half of August was unusually hot across Czechia, but the weather has shifted dramatically in recent days: after the drought and scorching heat came a cooldown, with heavy rain hitting some parts of the country. "The start of August was extremely hot — the rest of the month has been much cooler by comparison," the meteorologist notes.
Although the summer holidays are winding down, Czechs shouldn't say goodbye to warm weather just yet, says Šopko. "Right now, in August, we're seeing a cooldown, but temperatures could climb again in September — though not as high as in the first half of August," the forecaster explains.
It was during that early-August spell that weather stations recorded record-breaking temperatures — last Sunday, for instance, thermometers in some areas climbed above 37°C. Even so, meteorologists don't rule out a few genuinely hot days still ahead in September.
The outlook for precipitation is less clear. In recent days, heavy rain has fallen mainly in Bohemia (the western part of the country), bringing a sharp change in weather after a prolonged drought. Whether a similar pattern will repeat in September remains to be seen. "The rain mostly affected Bohemia. Whether similar precipitation will reach us in September can't be determined yet," the meteorologist explains.
That said, the current forecast doesn't point to any major flooding. "We're not expecting that," Šopko concluded.
