New Prague District Rising in Smíchov — the Country's Largest Construction Site

In Prague's Smíchov district, on the site of a former freight railway station, a brand-new residential and business quarter is taking shape — a project considered the largest construction undertaking in Czechia. Once completed, it will be home and workplace to thousands of Praguers.

A derelict 20-hectare industrial zone is being transformed into an entirely new part of the city. At the same time, the neighbouring passenger railway station is undergoing a major reconstruction of its own.

The station will become a transport hub

Smíchov railway station is set for a complete overhaul, turning it into a unified terminal linking trains, buses and city public transport. Work is being carried out without halting traffic, which means some platforms — or sections of them — are temporarily off-limits to passengers.

The reconstruction is expected to be fully finished only in six years' time. Until then, commuters will need to get used to temporary restrictions and a constantly changing station layout.
