In the area around Pařížská street in central Prague, as well as in neighbouring streets of Prague 1, around 50–60 percent of offences happen at night, while the picture for Prague as a whole is the opposite. This follows from an analysis of public police records for 2016–2025, carried out with the help of artificial intelligence.
Across the capital, 87 percent of incidents over those years — crimes and misdemeanours — took place during the day and only 13 percent at night, between 10 pm and 6 am. The Pařížská area shows an almost opposite skew. The same applies to Žatecká, Jáchymova, Maiselova, Salvátorská and Dlouhá streets and to Franz Kafka Square: at night this quarter does not sleep and turns into a place of noisy parties.
According to Vojtěch Ryvola (GEN), an outgoing member of the Prague 1 council, Prague 1 has here “become the nightclub of Europe.” He links this to short-term apartment rentals through Airbnb: young people from all over the world arrive in large groups, buy alcohol and drugs, such as psychoactive cannabis, consume them in short-term rental flats and then spill out onto the streets. Under the current conditions, he added, there is nothing to be surprised about.
The police assess the situation more soberly. As Prague police spokesman Jan Daněk said, all of this really does happen, but in the overwhelming majority of cases we are talking about misdemeanours, such as breaches of night-time quiet, rather than serious criminal activity. In addition, some offences cannot be clearly assigned to night-time: they are committed over an indefinitely long period, and the time “flows” from day into night or the other way round. Typical examples are a damaged parked car, a burglary or cybercrime, where the exact time cannot be established.
An enormous amount of data was sorted by artificial intelligence. The description of each incident states the place and time of commission. According to Irena Zatloukalová, head of the analytics firm Diversight, it was on these two criteria that events were assigned to a particular area — a polygon that includes both the street itself and its immediate surroundings. This was done because the data is anonymised and contains no exact GPS coordinates: this is needed to prevent repeat victimisation of those affected, for example in cases of sexual offences.
