Stone wedding in Libeň: couple mark 65 years of marriage that began with a waltz

On Friday, October 30, Mr and Mrs Serbus celebrated their stone wedding anniversary – 65 years of marriage – at Libeň Castle in Prague 8. Their story began in 1957 with a waltz at a dance evening in Holešovice, even though they lived only a couple of hundred metres from each other.

Meeting after years of missing each other

Libuše and Václav were a year apart in age, and their homes just one tram stop apart. Even so, they say, they never crossed paths as children or at school, although they attended the same one. They only met in 1957 at the so-called “teas” – afternoon dance events for young people that were popular at the time in Holešovice.

Seventeen-year-old Václav spotted sixteen-year-old Libuše right away, approached her with a bow and asked, as was the custom then: “May I have this dance?” The first dance was a waltz. It turned out that they moved in perfect step, and that they had a great many acquaintances in common, including many of each other’s classmates.

A wedding straight after the army

Even two years apart did not part them: Václav served in the army from 1959 to 1961, and Libuše waited for him. They married in 1961, first with a civil ceremony at the Old Town Hall and right afterwards a church wedding at the Church of Our Lady Victorious, home of the Infant Jesus of Prague.

It has been 65 years since the wedding and 69 since that first dance. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary in 2011 in the ceremonial hall of Libeň Castle, followed at five-year intervals by their emerald and diamond anniversaries.

Congratulations from the district mayor

The mayor of Prague 8, Ondřej Gros (ODS), came to the celebration. He wished not only the jubilarians but their whole family “many beautiful days” and “reasons to laugh together, reminisce and look forward to something good”. As Martin Šálek of the Prague 8 town hall noted, the greatest joy in both spouses’ lives is their children, grandchildren and ever-growing family. According to him, their descendants remind them every day that their life together had and has great meaning.

The couple are now about 85 years old: Václav was born in 1940, Libuše in 1941.
