Quarrel on French Motorway: Man Dumps Girlfriend on the Highway and Drives Off

In France, on the A89 motorway near the town of Servières, a quarrel between a couple on Saturday nearly ended in tragedy. According to local media, a man forced his partner out of the car while driving on the motorway and drove away, leaving her standing by the crash barrier in the middle of moving traffic.

The dangerous situation was spotted by several drivers, who alerted the gendarmerie and reported a pedestrian on the motorway — something strictly forbidden under French traffic laws. By the time a patrol arrived on motorcycles, the man was long gone, and the woman was still standing by the barrier as cars, including trucks, sped past at speeds of up to 130 km/h. She was eventually taken to safety by an unknown female driver who pulled over to help.

According to French media, such ways of “resolving” conflicts between partners are not uncommon: people are sometimes left stranded on the road — occasionally by accident, but often after a heated argument. Usually, however, this happens at roadside rest stops rather than on an open motorway in the middle of heavy traffic.

French traffic regulations strictly prohibit pedestrians from being on motorways. Local outlets note that anyone who deliberately puts another person at such direct risk can also face punishment — in this case, up to one year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros (roughly 364,344 crowns).

On social media, the incident has already been dubbed a new form of the so-called “Alpine breakup” — when one partner abandons the other out in nature during a hike. Legal experts are increasingly classifying such incidents as a form of domestic abuse.
