The remains of Yevhen Konovalets — one of the leaders of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, who was assassinated by a Soviet secret service agent in 1938 — have been brought to Kyiv with full military honors. According to Iryna Vereshchuk, deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, "Colonel Yevhen Konovalets was welcomed home on his native soil with full state and military honors."

Exhumation and the fate of the remains

News of the exhumation of Konovalets' remains broke on Tuesday. According to the outlet Ukrainska Pravda, the body will now undergo a series of examinations, including CT and MRI scans. Once all procedures are complete, he will be laid to rest at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

The same cemetery was the site, back in May, of the reburial of another OUN leader, Andriy Melnyk, who took over the movement following Konovalets' assassination, along with his wife, Sofiia.

A controversial historical figure

During World War II, Melnyk collaborated with the Nazis, and after the war he remained in emigration in Luxembourg, where he was buried following his death in 1964.
