Czech tennis player Kateřina Siniaková, ranked 44th in the world, exited the singles draw at the Cincinnati tournament after falling in the third round to American Madison Keys, the world No. 20, 1:6, 3:6. During the match, Siniaková dropped her serve twice in each set, and lost the decisive game on her own serve without winning a single point.
In the second set, the Czech player earned three break points against her higher-ranked opponent, who sits twenty places above her in the rankings, but failed to convert any of them. Despite the singles defeat, Siniaková will continue her run in doubles — in a final tune-up before the US Open, she and her regular partner Taylor Townsend are seeded first and have already reached the second round.
Following her gruelling Sunday win over Tereza Valentová, world No. 9 Elina Svitolina unexpectedly pulled out of the tournament. She had saved seven match points against the young Czech player, but did not take the court for her third-round match against China's Wang Xinyu.
The reason was a right ankle injury sustained earlier at the Toronto tournament, which had already required Svitolina to receive on-court medical treatment during her match against Valentová. As a result, Wang Xinyu was awarded the win by walkover.
