Real Madrid won the season's first El Clásico 2-1 at Camp Nou, with Kylian Mbappé scoring both goals, the winner coming in the 87th minute. Barcelona suffered their first La Liga defeat after nine straight wins, and Real won away at Barcelona for the first time in three years.
Before the break Arda Güler forced a save from Joan García, Raphinha twice went close and Mbappé tried an overhead kick. After the restart Lunin denied a powerful Martín header, and Lamine Yamal's 78th-minute shot bounced just wide.
The big talking point came on 57 minutes, when João Cancelo caught Diomande's calf with his studs and escaped punishment. José Mourinho called it a clear red card. Hansi Flick summed it up simply: it was his side's first defeat in La Liga.
Barcelona stay top on 27 points, but Real Madrid have cut the gap to three. Atlético Madrid are second, two points off the lead. Ten rounds in, the title race is wide open again.
For Mourinho it is a statement win in his first Clásico since returning to the Real bench. For Flick, it is a second straight defeat after the Champions League loss to PSG. Read our pre-match preview for the build-up and team news.
