PlayStation 5 owners planning to play Grand Theft Auto VI at launch may need to clear a large amount of space first. A report says the game requires a 210GB download on the console, and that applies even to people who buy a boxed copy. Rockstar Games has not confirmed the figure.
According to ThePCEnthusiast, the number comes from PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks PlayStation Store updates and download sizes. It posted the figure on Oct. 27, along with the game's price and preload schedule. Games.gg also reported the 210GB figure ahead of the Nov. 19 launch.
The original PS5 has an advertised 825GB SSD, and part of that is reserved for system functions. ThePCEnthusiast noted that if the game takes up 210GB once installed, it would use more than a quarter of the advertised capacity and an even bigger share of the space players can actually use.
Buying a physical copy will not avoid the download. According to ThePCEnthusiast, Rockstar has confirmed that the boxed edition contains a digital download code rather than a game disc. Boxed and digital buyers will therefore need the same large download.
The outlet also estimated download times under ideal conditions. On a stable 100Mbps connection, 210GB would take about 4 hours and 40 minutes. On a 50Mbps connection, it would take about 9 hours and 20 minutes. Real-world times could be longer because of network conditions, download overhead and server traffic.
ThePCEnthusiast said the dates and the Standard Edition price in the report match Rockstar's official information. Those details are a $79.99 price in the U.S., preloading from Nov. 12 and a release on Nov. 19, 2026. The game is due on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Neither Rockstar nor Sony has publicly verified the 210GB figure, and it does not appear on the game's public PlayStation Store page. The outlet also pointed out that download size and installed size are not necessarily the same, and that later updates could change how much storage the game needs.
The figure applies only to the PS5 version. Rockstar has not disclosed storage requirements for Xbox Series X|S. An official PC release and its system requirements have not been announced.
ThePCEnthusiast suggested that players first check Settings > Storage on the PS5 to see how much room is free. Games that are no longer played can be deleted or moved to external USB storage. PS5 games cannot be run from a USB drive, though. They must be moved back to internal storage or to a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played.
Adding a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD would let games run directly from the expanded storage. Sony recommends a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive with sequential read speeds of at least 5,500MB/s and a cooling solution such as a heatsink, according to the outlet.
Rockstar has confirmed that preloading begins at local midnight on Nov. 12, a week before the Nov. 19 release. Players who preload will be able to start the download before launch day. Whether the 210GB figure holds is expected to become clear once the download is listed or the preload goes live.
