Apple has acknowledged that some of its new foldable iPhone Duo handsets have inner-screen problems and says affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The company has not said how many units are involved or what caused the faults, according to the New York Post and the BBC.
The admission came within days of the phone's launch. It went on sale Friday, starting at $1,999, according to the Guardian.
Owners have posted on Reddit and other social platforms about white or colored lines across the display, cracks along the center crease and a crunching or cracking sound when the phone is opened, according to the Guardian and the BBC.
One user in Australia wrote that the screen broke along the hinge within six hours of purchase. The Guardian said it could not verify the claim. A Dallas Reddit user said his hinge became unusually tight after about four folds during setup, then made a loud pop, the New York Post reported. Bloomberg also highlighted similar complaints from users in the U.S. and India, the Guardian said.
Apple's statement said it was aware of an issue affecting the inner display on "a small number of iPhone Duo units." The company also said early customer response had been very positive and demand exceptional, according to the Guardian. Bloomberg reported that Apple believes most units are not susceptible and that affected phones show symptoms soon after first use.
For a device at this price, the practical question is who pays if the screen fails. Apple's listed price for an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair is $999, the New York Post reported. The paper noted that this does not mean customers with the acknowledged fault will be charged, since Apple has said it will replace affected phones.
The experiences described so far differ by route. The Australian user said his local Apple store replaced the phone immediately. The Dallas user said Apple's express replacement option required a hold for the phone's full price, so he went to a store, where staff swapped the unit at no charge. He also said AT&T warned him that going through the carrier could put him at the back of the January order queue.
Supply may complicate replacements. The Duo has sold out, and the next round of shipments is not expected until January, according to a report in Taiwan's Economic Daily cited by the Guardian. Some Apple stores ran out of walk-in stock soon after opening, the New York Post said.
IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said Apple needs to clarify its warranty position quickly because 28 more markets are due to get the phone on Oct. 30, according to the BBC.
Analysts urged caution. Jeronimo told the Guardian it was too early to say whether the issue is significant and that early problems are common with new products. Ben Wood of the research firm CCS said there was no evidence yet of a widespread problem.
The BBC reported that some images of faulty devices circulating online may have been created with AI, which adds to the uncertainty.
Ravi Sawhney, founder of the design firm RKS Design, told the Post that a visible bright line shows the display has malfunctioned but not why. He said investigators would need to compare damaged phones with unaffected ones from different production batches and try to reproduce the failures under controlled conditions. In his view, a recurring fault in properly assembled phones could point to a design flaw, while failures clustered in certain batches could suggest manufacturing inconsistencies.
The Duo is Apple's first foldable. It has a 7.6-inch inner display and a central hinge, which the BBC described as a complex piece of engineering that has caused similar flaws in rivals' folding devices. Samsung's first Galaxy Fold suffered an early setback in 2019 when reviewers reported broken screens. Jeronimo told the Guardian that Samsung's fast, transparent response helped limit damage to the category.
Sawhney told the Post that "confidence is part of the product" at this price. He said that if the failures prove isolated and Apple handles them well, confidence can recover, but that lingering uncertainty could lead some prospective buyers to delay purchases of foldables in general.
The Duo is due to launch in 28 more markets on Oct. 30. Apple has not disclosed how many devices are affected, the cause of the failures or any changes to its warranty terms. The phone is the highest-profile launch under chief executive John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook in September.
