Vysoké Mýto Reshapes Its Streets After Bypass Opens: Bus Station to Get Direct Access to the Highway

The town of Vysoké Mýto is beginning to redesign its streets now that through traffic has been diverted onto the new motorway bypass. The first project on the list is the junction of Javornická and Litomyšlská streets, which will be raised, given fewer lanes and redesigned with pedestrians in mind, according to Mayor František Jiraský.

Before the end of the year, the town council also plans to open talks with the Road and Motorway Directorate, the Pardubice Region and the Ministry of Transport about linking the bus station directly to the I/35 highway. For now, buses still have to wind through the town centre, since the stretch of highway running through Vysoké Mýto is officially classified as a first-category road with closely spaced junctions — meaning there simply isn't room to add another exit.

Buses to Get a Direct Route

"Buses will be able to turn straight off the I/35 onto the bus station grounds. Right now that's impossible because the junctions in town are too close together to fit another one in. Once traffic volumes drop, we'll start negotiations with the relevant authorities," Jiraský explained.

If everything goes according to plan, by autumn next year buses will be able to pull directly into the bay at the bus station, bypassing the tangle of town streets — a change that would benefit both local and long-distance routes.

New Bypass and Neighbouring Litomyšl's Plans

Town officials are preparing further changes, but first the through traffic coming from the direction of Choceň needs to be rerouted, since another bypass around Vysoké Mýto is planned there. According to Radek Mátl, director general of the Road and Motorway Directorate, the Pardubice Region is expected to select a contractor this year — the state has already approved funding of 600 million crowns, and the region has the necessary resources in place. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027.

Neighbouring Litomyšl is taking even longer to prepare for shifting its transit traffic onto the motorway. There, plans call for turning the busy Route 35 into a tree-lined urban boulevard with parking and pedestrian crossings.
