Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said that the war in Ukraine will end within months. He stressed that this is his personal opinion, adding that everyone is tired and that strength and resources have run out. Lukashenko’s remarks were reported by the Belarusian state news agency Belta.
By resources, he said, he did not mean raw materials, of which Russia has enough “for the whole world,” but something else: “There are no resources left in people’s heads.”
Lukashenko believes fatigue must have set in across European countries as well. He claimed they have finally realized this, even though the escalation came mostly from Europe: Kyiv’s Western friends, he said, demanded fighting “to the last Ukrainian” and supplied weapons to Belarus’s southern neighbor.
Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, on the orders of President Vladimir Putin. Since then, Ukraine has been defending itself with Western help, while the Russian army regularly attacks civilian infrastructure and other non-military targets with missiles and drones.
Representatives of Ukraine and Russia will meet in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, on Nov. 10 and 11, with US mediation, to discuss ending the war. According to Reuters, citing an unnamed senior US official, the American side will be led by Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
American negotiators are aiming for a breakthrough before winter sets in. The last US-mediated peace talks took place in February, before the US-Israeli strike on Iran, Reuters noted.
