Russia has carried out a massive strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces hit the Northern road bridge in the capital, while missiles and drones targeted the energy sector, transport infrastructure and defense industry enterprises. Because of the damage to power facilities, the situation with electricity, heating and water in Kyiv remains extremely difficult.
According to the Russian military, as cited by the TASS news agency, the bridge was used to transport weapons, military equipment and special hardware for the Ukrainian army. The statement includes no confirmation of damage to the bridge from the Ukrainian side.
According to the Ukrainian military, the main targets were thermal power plants in Kyiv and a distribution substation west of the city. The exact scale of the destruction has not yet been established.
Serhiy Pohrebetskyi, head of the city military administration, wrote that the overnight attack damaged power facilities in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, and that the situation with the capital’s power supply is “extremely difficult.” This is also affecting the heating and water supply systems. Power engineers and utility crews are working to restore services.
In the western part of the city, missile debris hit a five-story residential building, and the facade of another residential building was damaged. The military administration also reported damage to a kindergarten: a two-story building on its grounds was destroyed. According to Ukrainska Pravda, elsewhere a parked truck and a non-residential building caught fire; the blaze was extinguished.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of the planned strikes the day before, on Friday evening. Citing intelligence data, he said Russia was planning attacks on energy facilities and civilian infrastructure, including bridges across the Dnipro.
