Russia attacked power plants in Kyiv and Kharkiv in the evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X. The strikes came after US President Donald Trump had announced an energy truce.
“Unfortunately, Ukrainian skies were filled with Russian Shaheds all day. There were glide bomb strikes and strikes on our energy infrastructure. This evening they hit a power plant in Kharkiv,” Zelensky wrote. Shortly before, he said that ahead of his call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Russian forces had hit a power plant in Kyiv with a Shahed drone, cutting power in many districts. Strikes on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region followed later.
On Sunday, Trump announced the immediate start of an energy truce, saying both warring sides had agreed to the proposal. Zelensky, however, said he had not known about the truce before Trump's statement. He added that Ukraine would observe it if Russia did the same. Moscow has not yet commented on the proposal.
Zelensky recalled that Ukraine had proposed many de-escalation steps, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin had “one answer to everything: ‘no’.” He called Trump's statement good news, but said it was important that “it becomes reality.” “Ukraine's Armed Forces have received all the relevant orders. We are waiting for clear details of the dialogue between America and Russia, and we expect Putin to do what President Trump said,” he added.
