Trump says war in Ukraine will end soon despite ongoing fighting

Trump again promises swift end to war in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump said the war in Ukraine will end in the near future, although there is no sign of that yet on the front line. He made the remark during an appearance in the state of Maryland, a video of which was released by the White House.

“I’m working on it. I thought this war would be the easiest one for me, but we’ve already wrapped up eight wars, and this one will end soon too. A lot of people are dying in this war. It’s absurd. What happened is absurd, but believe it or not — even if it doesn’t sound true, the end really is getting closer,” Trump said. He repeated his disputed claim that he has already settled eight wars.

Trilateral talks in October

According to Western media, new trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia and the US could begin as early as October. The meeting is expected to take place in Abu Dhabi (UAE), where Washington plans to discuss an energy truce with both sides. Another goal cited by the American side is arranging a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine, Russia and the US at the G20 summit in Miami in December.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also floated the possibility of trilateral talks in early October. Meanwhile, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said in late September that the Kremlin still sees no reason to return to peace talks.

Not the first time Trump has made this promise

This is not the first time Trump has promised a swift end to the war in Ukraine. “Even before I enter the Oval Office, the catastrophic war between Russia and Ukraine will be settled by me. Settled quickly. Quickly. I will solve this problem, and I will solve it in a short time — it won’t take me more than one day. I know exactly what to say to each of them,” Trump promised, for instance, during his campaign on 4 March 2023. He later promised more than once to end the war within 24 hours.

More than three years and seven months have passed since that statement, and more than a year and eight months since Trump returned to the White House.

“We are working very closely with representatives of Russia and Ukraine, and we will solve this too. I think it will happen faster than people realize,” Trump promised two weeks ago, speaking at the UN General Assembly.
