R&B singer Chris Brown avoided prison on Monday when a London judge gave him an eight-month sentence, suspended for 12 months, for attacking a man with a tequila bottle at a Mayfair nightclub in February 2023. The BBC and The Guardian reported the sentence from Southwark Crown Court.
The 37-year-old had pleaded guilty to affray. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who joined the attack, received four months, also suspended for 12 months.
Both men were given suspended prison terms and ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. According to the BBC, the suspension means Brown will not be imprisoned unless he commits another offense during the 12-month period.
Judge Tony Baumgartner called the use of a glass bottle aimed at the head plainly dangerous, saying it risked a more serious injury than the one the victim suffered. The judge also said the violence was not planned but was serious, and that it created an obvious risk to others in a crowded club.
The attack took place at about 3 a.m. at the private members' club Tape on Feb. 19, 2023, and lasted no more than 20 seconds, the court heard. Surveillance footage shown in court showed Brown hitting music producer Abraham Diaw four times with a heavy tequila bottle, twice on the head and once on the shoulder, according to both outlets.
Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe said Akinlolu then grabbed Diaw in a bear hug, and Diaw fell to the ground. The Guardian reported that another clip showed Brown being pulled away from the victim. The Crown Prosecution Service said earlier that the assault continued as Diaw tried to flee through the club.
Diaw was taken to a hospital and discharged with pain relief and a diagnosis of head injury and a superficial knee injury, the BBC reported. An MRI scan in early March showed a high-grade ligament injury on the inner side of his left knee. The defense disputed how serious the injuries were, saying the force was relatively low, and told the court Diaw later withdrew his support for the prosecution.
The judge said Brown's fame and commercial success gave him no special treatment and that the law applies equally to everyone. But he also noted Brown's guilty plea, his compliance with bail conditions and the effect a prison term would have on Brown's children, and said the risk of further offending was low, the BBC reported.
Defense lawyers described Brown as a devoted father of four who has lived a law-abiding life since his last conviction in 2013. They called the episode a short and deeply regretted incident, and said he offered a profound apology to everyone at the club. Akinlolu's lawyer said he believed Brown was under attack when he joined in.
ABC News reported that Brown had denied the allegations at first. Prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and having an offensive weapon in return for guilty pleas to affray, which Brown and Akinlolu entered in July. Affray carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
Brown left the United Kingdom after the brawl and was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after flying in for a concert. He was released on bail of 5 million pounds ($6.7 million), which let him tour Europe and North America last summer, ABC reported.
The suspended sentence lets Brown go free, but it hangs over him for a year: any new offense in that period could put the prison term into effect. After the hearing, the BBC reported, he shared a video from his car on Instagram and gave a thumbs-up, and there were loud cheers outside the court.
