Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers flew a scheduled mission over the neutral waters of the Bering and Chukchi seas, and foreign fighter jets joined them at certain stages, Russia's Defense Ministry said on Monday. The long-range aircraft spent more than 13 hours in the air and refueled in flight.
The aircraft can carry nuclear-tipped missiles. According to the ministry, they were escorted by Russian Su-35S fighters.
Over the Caspian Sea, as part of the “Center-2026” command-staff exercise, a Tu-160 strategic bomber, which can also carry nuclear weapons, made a flight. It was covered by Su-30SM fighters, and the ministry noted that this aircraft, too, drew the attention of foreign fighter jets.
The Tu-95MS (NATO reporting name: Bear) is a Soviet four-engine turboprop strategic bomber and cruise missile carrier, a key airborne element of Russia's nuclear triad. Its NK-12MP engines are known for their extremely loud noise. The aircraft has a top speed of up to 925 kilometers per hour and a range of up to 15,000 kilometers, and it can refuel in mid-air.
