New Jersey teacher had child with 13-year-old pupil, gets 5 years

New Jersey teacher who had a child with a 13-year-old pupil gets five years in prison

Laura Caron, a teacher from Middle Township, New Jersey, has pleaded guilty to years of sexual abuse of her pupil, with whom she had a daughter in 2019. Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, she will serve five years in prison and be permanently barred from working as a teacher, The Sun reports.

How the relationship with the pupil began

The abuse lasted from 2016 to 2020. It began when the boy was 11 years old. His parents trusted the teacher, spoke with her often and sometimes let their son stay overnight at her home. But the teacher grew close to the child and began to sexually exploit him.

In 2019, Caron gave birth to a daughter. At the time, nobody paid it much attention: the woman did not name the child's father.

What gave the teacher away

The truth only came out in 2024. Caron posted a photo of her five-year-old daughter on social media, and the father of the victim noticed that the girl looked very much like his son. He shared the picture and wrote about it in a post.

The teenager's sister confirmed the suspicions: according to her, her brother had told her he was the girl's father. One of the police officers noticed the comments under the photo and informed his superiors, after which an investigation began. During questioning, the boy confirmed the intimate contact with the teacher and his paternity. Prosecutors counted at least 416 incidents.

The sentence and the former pupil's stance

Last January, Caron was charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, and in June 2025 the prosecutor sent the case to court. She admitted guilt and took a plea deal. In addition to five years in prison and a lifetime ban on teaching, she must undergo a sexual and psychological evaluation.

“Teachers are given an enormous amount of trust, and the charges in this case represent the deepest violation of it,” said County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland.

The former pupil, who is now 20, disagrees with the sentence. According to the Daily Mail, he said: “I'm not a victim. Investigators should drop all these charges. She didn't manipulate me, I started it all.” He added that he did not want the teacher to be called a predator, saying that it all began with his father's post on Facebook.

The court will hand down the final sentence next January.
