Royal Navy Member Charged With Helping Unnamed Foreign Power Under UK Security Law

A serving member of the Royal Navy has been charged in London with offenses under the National Security Act, accused of acting for the benefit of an unnamed foreign power, according to Al Jazeera and ABC News. Teddy Young, 24, was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Police said the case has no connection to the separate investigation into a security alert at RAF Fairford, a British air base.

London's Metropolitan Police Service said Young faces two charges. According to Al Jazeera, they relate to allegedly obtaining protected information and preparing to transfer it for the benefit of a foreign power. ABC News described the second charge as preparing to disclose protected information.

Authorities said Young obtained, copied, recorded or retained protected information, intending to benefit a foreign power, contrary to section 1 of the National Security Act 2023. ABC News reported that Young was first arrested on May 21, 2025, and released on bail while the investigation continued. His security clearance was suspended at that time and he was removed from his duties, the outlet said.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counter terrorism policing in London, called the allegations “very serious charges against a serving member of the armed forces.” She said police worked closely with Ministry of Defense colleagues during the investigation so that appropriate steps could be taken to reduce any potential risks.

The Royal Navy acknowledged the arrest of a service member. It said that because legal proceedings are ongoing, further comment would be inappropriate.

Police stressed that the charges are unrelated to the RAF Fairford investigation. ABC News reported that U.S. bombers have launched strikes against Iran from that base. Three suspicious vans were found near it in the early hours of Sept. 27, prompting an inquiry that has led to the arrest of seven men, the outlet said.
