France protests on Saturday: second wave after riots and arson

Second wave of protests begins in France after riots and the burning of a town hall

France will see a second wave of protests by the “October 17 Movement” on Saturday. The previous rallies ended in violence and looting: the town hall in Limoges was burned down, 1,500 shops were damaged, and police detained almost two and a half thousand people.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu admitted that the authorities failed to cope last Saturday and warned of a “massive deployment of police”. President Macron went even further: according to him, the government will ban all demonstrations that are not organised by official trade unions.

The authorities do not yet know who is behind the movement. The group has announced protests every Saturday from 3 p.m. They are expected to cover not only Paris but also other large cities, such as Reims, Lille, Strasbourg and Bordeaux.

A general strike in all sectors has already been called in France for 5 November.
