Three naval drones have hit a container ship in Bulgaria's contiguous zone. The crew is safe. The strike came while the defence ministers of Bulgaria, Turkey and Romania were meeting in Sofia.
Bulgarian minister Dimitar Stoyanov said the vessel was hit about 21 nautical miles (around 39 kilometres) from Shabla. Bulgarian rescue services, the navy, air force and border police took part in the rescue operation.
A representative of the Greek company that operates the ship thanked Bulgaria for its swift action and confirmed that everyone on board is fine.
Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey adopted a joint statement condemning attacks on civilian shipping. According to Stoyanov, such incidents are a dangerous escalation and a serious threat to safe navigation. He called for an immediate end to strikes that endanger merchant ships, maritime infrastructure and security at sea. Turkey's defence minister is Yaşar Güler, and Romania's is Ştefan-Radu Oprea.
