US to evacuate some embassy staff in the Persian Gulf region

US preparing to pull some diplomats and their families from Gulf embassies

The U.S. State Department is preparing to order some staff at American embassies in the Persian Gulf region and their families to leave their host countries. This was reported by Reuters, citing three unnamed U.S. officials.

The reason given is the possible resumption of hostilities, apparently with the Iran-linked Houthi insurgent movement, two of the officials explained. On Wednesday, the U.S. embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert over possible new Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

“The departure order could potentially include the evacuation of all staff and their families from the U.S. diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia,” the officials added.

According to an unnamed source of the AFP news agency, cited by The Times of Israel, the evacuation will also affect all American embassy staff in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan.
