Paris Saint-Germain's home league match against Lyon has been pushed back 24 hours, from Sunday to Monday, as France prepares for another weekend of protests. The change also puts the game on the same day as the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where several PSG players are among the nominees. Al Jazeera and the BBC both reported the move.
The French league, the LFP, announced on Friday that it was rescheduling the Ligue 1 match after a police decree prohibited it from going ahead on Sunday. Al Jazeera reported that the police made the request amid a wave of violent protests in the French capital. The game was due to kick off at 8:45 p.m. local time, 19:45 GMT, at the Parc des Princes. It will now be played at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
Authorities are bracing for more demonstrations in Paris and across the country on Saturday. About a week ago, some of the worst urban violence in years broke out on the edges of protests, with rioting and looting in Paris and other cities on Oct. 17, according to Al Jazeera.
The BBC reported that around 550,000 people took part in demonstrations last Saturday over rising fuel prices, education standards and the cost of living. Those grievances have escalated after weeks of student protests. The marches, backed by unions and student groups, took place in several major cities, including Paris, and were marred by some violence, looting and destruction.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Tuesday that officials would mount a massive security operation for Saturday's protests, with troops reinforcing police, Al Jazeera reported.
The PSG match is one of several big sporting events in the Paris area this weekend. On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers are due to play the New Orleans Saints in an NFL regular-season game at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, which is expected to require a significant police deployment. That adds to the security challenge for authorities.
Elsewhere, Toulouse's Ligue 1 home match against Troyes has already been moved from Saturday to Sunday at the request of local authorities, the LFP said on Wednesday.
For ticket holders and supporters, the practical effect is a one-day delay and a later start time on a weeknight. Anyone planning to attend should expect the heavy security presence that officials have promised around the weekend's events.
The new date collides with the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday. Several PSG players are on the men's shortlist, including reigning winner Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, Vitinha, Willian Pacho, Fabian Ruiz and Ferran Torres. Al Jazeera said the schedule change means Dembele will miss the event, and described him as once again among the favorites. The BBC listed Dembele and Kvaratskhelia as injured PSG players among the contenders. Reports therefore differ on the exact reason for Dembele's absence, and neither outlet said how the other nominees will handle the clash.
The two teams are close at the top of the table. Al Jazeera reported that defending champion PSG and Lyon were level on 14 points heading into this weekend's eighth round of games. The BBC said Lyon lead on goal difference, with PSG second after seven matches. PSG are the reigning French and European champions.
