The zaměstnanecká karta (Czech employee card) is a residence permit for non-EU citizens. It lets you live in Czechia and work for a specific employer in a specific job. It is issued for a maximum of 2 years. The fee is CZK 2,500 if you apply in Czechia and CZK 5,000 at an embassy, and the Ministry of the Interior decides within 60 days (90 in complex cases). You can change employer, but only by the rules: usually not earlier than 6 months after collecting your first card, and with notice to the Ministry at least 30 days before you start the new job. After your job ends you have 90 days to do this. An extension can be filed no earlier than 120 days before the card expires and no later than its last day of validity.

Who needs an employee card and who doesn't

You need the card if you are a non-EU citizen who wants to work in Czechia for more than 3 months and you don't have free access to the labour market. You don't need it if you are:

Without free access, you may only work in the position the card was issued for. Working "on the side" without notifying the Ministry can mean a fine and the loss of your right to stay.

Requirements and documents

The card is tied to a specific job. The employer must register the vacancy in the central database of vacancies open to employee card holders and give you its number, which goes on the application form. You need an employment contract or an agreement to perform work (DPČ), or a preliminary contract. The working week must be at least 15 hours, and the monthly pay must not be lower than the minimum wage (CZK 22,400 in 2026), even for a shorter week. The employer must not be listed as "unreliable" (nespolehlivý zaměstnavatel).

How to get it: in Czechia or through an embassy

In Czechia, you must apply no later than the last day of your current visa or residence permit. While the application is pending, you are in the country legally. Once approved, you give biometrics and collect the card within 60 days. When collecting your first card, bring the employer's confirmation that you have already started work in that position.

Changing employer on an employee card

This is the most common question and where most mistakes happen. You must notify the Ministry not only about a new employer:

If you don't have free access to the labour market

Attach to the notification: the form, proof that you still work for your current employer or when that job ended, the new contract (DPČ or preliminary contract) for a vacancy in the central database and, if needed, proof of qualification. You can file it in person, by post, via a datová schránka (the official electronic mailbox) or by email with a recognised electronic signature (uznávaný elektronický podpis). If documents are missing, the notification is deemed ineffective — as if it had never been filed. So don't wait until the last days of the 90-day period.

If you have free access to the labour market

You can start the new job straight away and notify the Ministry within 3 days of starting. You don't have to wait for any confirmation.

Extending the employee card

After 5 years of continuous residence you can apply for permanent residence, which requires an A2 Czech exam — see our guide to permanent residency in Czechia. If a decision on your application is late, set a free reminder: OAMP application deadlines.

For Ukrainians with temporary protection

Temporary protection holders cannot get an employee card, but they don't need one: they can work for any employer without a permit, and the employer only registers them before the first working day. What matters is the protection itself: the extension sticker must be obtained no later than 30 September 2026, and the procedure for the next extension — until 31 March 2028 — will be announced separately by the Ministry. Details in extending temporary protection. The long-term alternative is special long-term residence (zvláštní dlouhodobý pobyt), which also gives free access to the labour market.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I have to find a new job after my employment ends?

90 days from the last day of your previous job, if it ended on 2 August 2025 or later. Within that time the notification of your new job must reach the Ministry; otherwise the employee card expires.

Can I change employer in the first 6 months?

As a rule, no: you can start a new job no earlier than 6 months after collecting your first card. Exceptions: the card has already been extended, you only change position with the same employer, or the job ended for reasons listed in the law (e.g. redundancy or dismissal during the probation period).

How much does changing employer cost?

The notification is free. The Ministry responds within 30 days, and you can start the new job no earlier than 30 days after filing the notification.

When should I apply to extend my employee card?

No earlier than 120 days before and no later than the last day of the card's validity. The fee is CZK 2,500 and processing takes 60 days. While you wait, you can keep working in the same position.

Can Ukrainians with temporary protection get an employee card?

No, temporary protection holders cannot apply for an employee card. But they don't need one: temporary protection gives free access to the labour market without any permit.

Can I work through an agency on an employee card?

Yes, but agencies face extra conditions and documents. You can only change employer within the same agency — moving from one agency to another by notification is not possible.
