In mid-August, a fire broke out in a 21-storey residential building in Berlin's Friedrichshain district. The blaze started early in the morning on the 11th floor and quickly spread to neighbouring flats, German news agency DPA reports.
One resident of the building — reportedly from the flat where the fire began — became trapped by the flames and had no choice but to climb out through a window. She had to jump from a height of roughly two metres onto an extremely narrow ledge to escape the fire.
Video footage shows the woman first sitting on the windowsill, then hanging by her hands as she grips the frame, before finally letting go and dropping down onto a small ledge, where a firefighter catches her. A spokesperson for the local fire brigade described the rescue operation as a genuine drama.
Firefighters managed to put out the blaze within three hours. According to the fire service, at least five people were injured, though the severity of their injuries has not yet been disclosed.
