Polish police have detained a man who threatened Prime Minister Donald Tusk and planned to attack him. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced it on X, and the prime minister later confirmed the news himself, thanking the police for their swift and decisive work.
“We are taking this deadly seriously,” a spokesman for Jacek Dobrzyński, the minister-coordinator of special services, told broadcaster TVN24. According to him, the police, the state protection service and intelligence are receiving more and more threats against Poland and Poles with each passing month and year. This time the threats concern the country’s most important officials, and the safety and lives of the prime minister and the deputy prime minister.
The Interior Ministry made the information about the planned attack public on Sunday morning. As ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałecka wrote on X, after police received information about a possible assassination attempt on Tusk and on Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Minister Kierwiński and special services coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak ordered the necessary measures to be taken.
The announcement came as Polish authorities were already on heightened alert over a series of violent incidents at schools. On Thursday, a school employee was killed in one of them.
Three attacks have taken place over the past week. On Wednesday, a 19-year-old student attacked people at a vocational school in Ostrołęka and wounded nine. The next day, a 15-year-old former primary school pupil in Leszczydół-Nowiny stabbed and killed a 37-year-old staff member. On Saturday, a 21-year-old woman attacked three people at a private school in Warsaw; their lives are not in danger.
