Police have detained a poacher who shot two wolves in the Most District of northwestern Czechia. Police spokesman Václav Kriger announced the news on Monday. According to him, investigators learned about the killing of the protected animals only several months later.
“In the Flaje game preserve in the Most District, the accused deliberately shot two grey wolves, a critically endangered and strictly protected species. According to investigators, he then hid their bodies in the forest so they would not be found. The man killed a male and a female,” Kriger said.
The police spokesman said an inspection of the site where the skeletons of the slain wolves lay played an important role in the investigation. Officers did not say who had reported the suspicion. Kriger only added that the accused had also boasted about what he had done.
Detectives charged the 44-year-old with the unlawful handling of protected animals and with poaching. He faces up to three years in prison. In addition, several legally held firearms and ammunition were seized from him.
