Something has happened on the Vltava Cascade that has not occurred in the entire seventy-year history of the Slapy dam: the reservoir has begun to be drained for the first time. It is the most serious test for the cascade since it was built.
In Prague itself, thanks to the cascade system, the river looks as usual, but a little further upstream the picture is almost apocalyptic: places that were hidden beneath the surface for decades are emerging from the water. Photos from the shrunken Slapy show, among other things, the wrecks of cars and boats.
The situation raises anew the question of how Czechia should cope with drought.
