On Friday, 6 November, a large-scale power outage in Prague’s Malá Strana district forced the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament to interrupt its session. Only the emergency lights stayed on in the chamber. According to Pražská energetika, the capital’s energy utility, faults occurred at two distribution substations on the left bank of the Vltava at once, and power is expected to be restored at around 11 a.m.
The outage caught lawmakers off guard. Marie Kršková, a deputy for the Christian Democratic Union (KDU-ČSL), admitted that power cuts in the district are fairly common, but she was surprised that they automatically knock out the entire Chamber of Deputies.
She expressed her bewilderment on the social network X (formerly Twitter). In her words, the question arises of where the protection of the state’s critical infrastructure is and what needs to be improved in this area. Kršková summed up her assessment briefly: “We have something to improve.”
