What We Know About the Deadly Shooting at a Fairfield, California, Halloween Store

One person was killed and six others were wounded in a shooting at a Spirit Halloween store inside the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday night, according to police. As of the latest reports, no arrests had been announced, and detectives were working to identify the person or people responsible.

What happened in Fairfield?

The Fairfield Police Department said officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 8:30 p.m. local time Friday, which NBC News said was 5:30 p.m. ET. It was the eve of Halloween. Seven people were found with gunshot wounds, and one of them later died, police said, as reported by ABC News and Fox News.

Police said the six surviving victims were taken to local hospitals. At least three were in critical condition, according to the department.

Who are the victims?

Authorities had not released the identities of the victims, ABC News and Fox News reported. NBC News said no further information was provided about the people who were shot.

Have police identified a suspect?

Not publicly. NBC News reported that a manhunt was underway, and Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said detectives were working to identify the suspect or suspects. ABC News reported that the scene remained an active crime scene and that detectives were speaking with witnesses.

Fox News reported that police did not immediately provide information about a suspect and that the investigation was continuing.

Marshall spoke at a news conference shortly before midnight, according to ABC News. He said he hoped investigators would obtain footage from the mall’s security cameras.

What did people at the scene say?

David Bernal told KCRA, an NBC News affiliate, that his wife was inside the store when the gunman opened fire. She escaped through an emergency exit with several other people, he said. She told him she heard “five big bangs,” according to NBC News, and ran out through an exit on the other side of the mall. Bernal said she was at home and still in shock.

Police described the shooting as a heartbreaking incident and said their thoughts were with the victims’ families. Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez, whose city neighbors Fairfield, also expressed concern for the victims and their families, Fox News reported. She asked residents to pray for the victims and for the officers working to bring the suspect into custody.

Why does it matter to people in the area?

The shooting happened at a busy shopping center on one of the biggest nights of the Halloween season, and the case remains open. Police are asking anyone in the community who has information to contact the Fairfield Police Department at 707-428-7600 or by email at [email protected], Fox News reported.

Because the mall has security cameras, investigators are hoping that video may help them identify the person responsible, according to the police chief’s remarks reported by ABC News.

What happens next?

The investigation is active. ABC News described the story as developing, and police are expected to release more information as detectives speak with witnesses and work to identify the suspect or suspects. Details such as the victims’ names and their conditions had not been disclosed.
