In front of the US embassy on Tržiště street in Prague’s Malá Strana, two activists poured red liquid from a barrel resembling an oil drum onto the roadway. The action was carried out by a Ukrainian initiative in protest against the American president’s deal with Russia to increase diesel supplies to world markets.
Two members of the group brought a barrel of red liquid, coloured with food dye, to the entrance before 2 p.m. and poured it onto the road. Signs appeared nearby reading “American oil treason = European blood!”, and one of the participants unfurled a Ukrainian flag and chanted “Glory to Ukraine” and “Trump is a traitor”. “The symbolic blood flowing from the barrel in front of the American embassy is a reminder of the cynicism with which the United States has traded the lives and suffering of Ukrainians for its own selfish business,” the initiative said in a statement to the press.
Police identified the activists and took them to the station about twenty minutes later. As police spokesman Richard Hrdina said afterwards, they had soiled a public space, so misdemeanour proceedings will be started against them.
According to Trump, Russia will first deliver more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to the US under the deal, with further deliveries to follow in November and the months after. The activists said they were outraged by “the betrayal by the US leadership”. Ukraine, they recalled, received security guarantees under the Budapest Memorandum, gave up nuclear weapons, met the demands of the current administration, including the minerals agreement, and is proposing steps towards a ceasefire, yet the White House is still lifting sanctions on Russian raw materials and switching off key infrastructure such as Starlink. In their view, Trump has effectively sided with Russia.
“This is an incredible scandal. In effect, the Russians have already moved into the American embassy. We want to draw attention to the fact that Americans are our enemies, not our allies,” said Otakar van Gemund of the Kaputin group. In his view, European leaders should respond firmly and uncompromisingly, fully support Ukraine and keep supplying weapons.
This is not the group’s first action in support of Ukraine. Earlier this year, activists slipped into the National Museum and, in the middle of a working day, hung a Ukrainian flag from the balcony in protest against its removal from the façade last August. Before that, together with the “Civic Signpost” initiative, they projected a flag onto the façade of the museum’s new building with a laser and added the words “Russia must be defeated”.
