Near Kyiv, residents who believed rumors that soldiers were being beaten broke into the grounds of a private house and attacked police officers. Police vehicles and a National Guard bus were damaged, and 18 men were led out of the house, four of whom were taken to hospital.
According to available information, the private house was used to temporarily accommodate guardsmen who had left their units without permission and were detained. Reports began spreading on social media that the servicemen were being held there against their will and beaten. The news caused outrage, and local residents burst onto the property and tried to break down the gates. People said that marks of beatings were visible on the soldiers' bodies; according to a reporter for the news site Unian, one of the detainees has a broken spine.
During the disorder, police vehicles were damaged and the crowd smashed up a National Guard bus; shots were also heard, Ukrainska Pravda reports. In the end, 18 men were led out of the house, and four of them were taken to hospital.
The State Bureau of Investigation has opened a criminal case on suspicion of abuse of authority by a serviceman. Investigators will establish the conditions in which the soldiers were held in the house, whether coercion or violence was used against them, and how exactly the conflict arose.
The servicemen in the house were reportedly awaiting assignment to units for further service. National Guard commander Oleksandr Pivnenko and the leadership of the National Police came to the scene. He rejected the accusations of torturing soldiers. “Soldiers mean everything to us; they are defending our Ukraine. And any mistreatment of them is unacceptable,” he stressed.
Later, the head of the presidential administration, Kyrylo Budanov, also came to deal with the situation, but according to some media reports, the crowd turned on him as well.
