Budweis (České Budějovice) works as a day trip from Prague: the Ex7 express takes 1 h 38 min from Prague main station (Praha hl.n.), and IDOS showed CZK 229 for 4 November. Arriving at 8:59 (train at 7:21) and leaving at 17:58 leaves about 9 hours for the main square with the Samson Fountain and the Budvar brewery. The English tour runs daily at 14:40 for CZK 290 and has to be booked in advance. Around Prague checked prices, hours and timetables on the official websites of the city and the brewery and in the IDOS timetable on 2 November 2026.
King Přemysl Otakar II founded Budweis in 1265, and the old town sits between the Vltava and the Malše. Přemysl Otakar II Square (náměstí Přemysla Otakara II.) measures about 133 × 137 m and is lined by 48 houses with arcades. In the middle stands the Samson Fountain (Samsonova kašna), built in 1721–1727, 17 m across; the city calls it the largest in Czechia. The official pages do not say whether it runs in winter.
Budweis is not on the Prague Visitor Pass list.
Budějovický Budvar (visitor centre K. Světlé 512/4) has brewed since 7 October 1895 and calls itself the last big brewery in fully Czech hands. It is not the American Budweiser of Anheuser-Busch; the brewery’s history page covers the naming dispute.
The Samson brewery (Lidická tř. 458/51) lists no tour prices or times on its website; the South Bohemian region’s tourist portal says tours run all year, by reservation only, tel. +420 386 708 120.

IDOS showed no trains after the 13 December 2026 timetable change on 2 November. By car it is about 150 km and 1 h 50 min (OpenStreetMap routing); motorways such as the D1 need the electronic vignette.

From Austria and Bavaria: Linz Hbf to Budweis takes 1 h 58 min by EC Jižní expres (6:54, 11:54, 15:54, 19:54). From Vienna Hbf (10:28) or Munich Hbf (8:03) you change in Linz onto the 11:54 EC, arriving 13:52: 3 h 24 min from Vienna, 5 h 49 min from Munich (IDOS, Sat 7 and Mon 9 November). By car: Munich 312 km, 3 h 53 min; Linz 100 km, 1 h 23 min (OpenStreetMap routing). Austrian motorways and expressways need a vignette; the 10-day car vignette costs EUR 12.80 in 2026.
Hluboká Castle (German name Frauenberg) is 15 km north. The bus from České Budějovice bus station takes 25–35 minutes to the stop “Hluboká n. Vlt., pod kostelem” (lines 131, 135, 150). The castle says the train stops are at least 3 km away. The winter route takes 40 minutes, up to 20 people. See our Hluboká guide.
Český Krumlov is 30 minutes from Budweis by RegioJet (CZK 49) or 44 minutes by the S4 train (CZK 81). Since 1 November only the museum and tower are open at the castle, Tue–Sun 9:00–15:30 until 20 December. See our Český Krumlov guide.
The České Budějovice Advent runs from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 on the main square and in the town hall courtyard. Stalls are open daily: gifts 10:00–20:00, food and drink 10:00–22:00; the ice rink opens 20 November. From 24 December a holiday version runs without the craft and gift alleys.
Our calculation: Ex7 at 7:21, main square, museum and lunch until 14:00, the English tour at 14:40, the 17:58 train back (arrives 19:39). Per person 229 + 239 + 290 = CZK 758, about EUR 31 without food.
The fastest is the Ex7 from Praha hl.n. in 1 h 38 min; the RegioJet bus takes 2 h 5 min.
