Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it hurts that Donald Trump has chosen the wrong side. In an interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan on Wednesday, he admitted that he feels betrayed and said that Ukraine, which is repelling Russian aggression, has been losing a strong partner in the United States in recent days.
The trigger was Trump’s evident tilt towards Russia. Last Friday the US president announced an agreement with Vladimir Putin on supplying Russian oil, which is under Western sanctions over the aggression in Ukraine, to the American and global markets. Trump also said that Putin has more will to reach a deal than Zelensky does, and this comes amid intensifying Russian strikes.
Trump is also pressing Zelensky over high oil prices. In his view, the blame lies with Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, not with the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has restricted oil shipments through the key Strait of Hormuz.
“It hurts when President Trump chooses one side, and not ours,” Zelensky said. Asked by Morgan whether he feels betrayed, he answered yes after a few seconds of thought. “Truly yes, between us, but it is a bit more complicated than just my emotions,” the Ukrainian leader added.
According to Zelensky, Kyiv did not object to the American leader’s neutral position, but he should not have changed it. He suggested the reason for the shift might be advisers who are pushing Trump in the wrong direction. “This is not the right side of history,” Zelensky concluded.
